Ex-Lindsey Graham aide, Kevin Bishop, announced run for U.S. Congress

EASLEY, S.C. (WCIV) — Kevin Bishop, the recently retired communications director for U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R), announced Thursday he is running for United States Congress in South Carolina’s 3rd Congressional District.

The seat was held by Rep. Jeff Duncan (R), who announced in January he would not seek an eighth term in office.

“I was born and raised in South Carolina, and for the past 25 years, Easley and Pickens County have been my home,” Bishop said in a press release announcing his candidacy. “It’s where Julie and I bought a house, joined a church, raised four wonderful children, and cheered on my Clemson Tigers. The rest of the country could learn a lot from people and places like Easley.”

The district is solidly Republican in one of the most conservative areas in South Carolina. It spans 10 counties in the most western corner of the state, from near Augusta on the state border to just past Greenville.

Bishop is no stranger to politics or public life.

He started working in politics in high school, serving as a Senate page in Washington for Sen. Strom Thurmond, the former South Carolina governor and staunch segregationist.

He graduated from Clemson University in 1993 and worked for the Conservative Leadership Institute.

Eventually, Bishop’s career landed him on Graham’s staff in 1997, when Graham represented South Carolina’s 3rd Congressional District. Bishop then helped Graham on his Senate campaign in 2002. From there, he worked with Graham until his retirement in February 2024.

“Kevin has one of the brightest minds in public service,” Graham said when Bishop announced his retirement. “Kevin’s understanding of policy and politics at the state and national level is second to none. He has been an invaluable advisor and friend – and at times, a sparring partner on the issues.”

Graham hasn’t formally announced an endorsement of any candidate running in South Carolina’s 3rd Congressional District.

Also running are Rep. Stewart Jones (R-Laurens and Sheri Biggs.
